Chapter 6

Since when had their town become such a target for disappearances and wacked out relatives? Bailey could only recall a handful of events over the years that affected the pack, but now… things were just weird.

First the thing with Samantha, and now this. At least the Roland situation wasn’t part of this, but Bailey wished for his mate’s sake that the bastard left for good and preferably soon. He didn’t care if he went to jail or not, Bailey just wanted him to leave Jeremy alone.

He didn’t know what role Jeremy’s mom had played in Roland finding him this time, but if she really was the one who’d told Jeremy to come here, then Bailey figured he owed her a fruit basket or something.

There were several cars already parked outside when he reached the place. Even in the dark, Bailey only had to glance across the crowd once to get a lock on Harley. He was too big to miss.

“Any trace of them?” Bailey asked, concerned, as he walked up to his brother.

“I can scent Lawrence’s blood in the area, but I can’t seem to follow any trace of it beyond the property,” Harley said.

“That doesn’t necessarily mean anything,” Bailey muttered. “He probably just had a nosebleed or something after Jeremy’s stepdad attacked him.”

“Excuse me?” Harley asked, surprised.

“You didn’t hear about the spectacle down at the diner yesterday?” Bailey asked. “Probably why Mallory was here in the first place, to get a statement from Lawrence. He had to see the doc to reset his nose, so he left before Mallory and Doug got to the scene.”

“I knew Doug headed off to deal with some dispute, but I didn’t know Lawrence was part of it and definitely not Jeremy’s stepfather?”

“Yeah, caught me by surprise, too.” Bailey rubbed the back of his neck. “Turns out he’s a real asshole. A homophobe with some aggrandized notion of Jeremy taking over the family business.”

“The family business? What the hell? Is he a mobster or something?” Harley asked skeptically.

“A butcher,” Bailey informed him, “but on a big scale. He also seems to think he can beat the gay out of Jeremy and straighten him out.”

“Do you think he could have anything to do with this?” Harley asked him.

“He seemed to think Lawrence was fucking Jeremy, but Doug took him to the station and put him behind bars. I’m guessing he’s still there,” Bailey reasoned.

“Actually, that’s not quite the case,” Duke said after suddenly appearing, his bike parked next to Harley’s big truck. “I went over to the police station, wanting to find out what was up with that guy, only to have Doug tell me that right after he arrested the prick, he got a call from a lawyer. Beck hadn’t even had his one phone call yet.”

“You can’t tell me some law-rat got him off the hook with only one phone call. He assaulted someone,” Bailey said angrily.

“Apparently he was very convincing,” Duke said with disgust. “Said it would be in everyone’s best interest to let him off with a warning, seeing as he is such a stand up citizen and all.
